Talbot, Emma, 2017, Show, Exhibition or Event, 'The World Blown Apart', 2017, One person exhibition at Galerie Onrust, Amsterdam

Abstract or Description:

A one person exhibition of painted silk hangings, including the double sided hanging 'The World Blown Apart' 2017, which had been featured at Art Rotterdam in 2017. The painted works incorporate hand drawn image, text, pattern and gesture to convey associated thought and personal narratives.
`the work in this exhibition pitched contemporary political landscapes against personal narratives and raised questions about personal and political power.
'The World Blown Apart', Acrylic on Silk, is a rumination on the comparisons made between the political situation in 2017 and the 1930s, with a focus on the potential for a world war. Considering this, one side of the piece refers to the displacement of people in contemporary times, whilst the other reconstructs the story of the artist's own grandparents, who were German refugees in the 1930s. Holes cut through both sides allow the viewer to see both time frames simultaneously, whilst also referencing the disruptive apertures made by bullet and bomb holes in walls.
Other paintings in the exhibition include a group of silk hangings on twigs, titled 'Oracles', delivering messages from dreams and premonitions, and large silk hangings 'Time, Folded', 'Pandora's box; Plant Your Scraps of Hope' and 'Why Do You Fear The Power Within?"(The latter two collected from the exhibition by the Arnhem Museum Collection NL and KRC Collection NL respectively).
The exhibition was reviewed by Rudi Fuchs in De Groene Amsterdammer, 14.6.17
