Hayley, Emma, ed. 2012, Book, Behind the Curtain Self Made Hero, London. (In Press)

Abstract or Description:

An autobiographical account of life in communist Poland in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. Andrzej Klimowski and Danusia Schejbal describe the rich and highly improvised cultural life of two young artists starting out on their professional careers against the background of political unrest, where the economic inconsistencies and absurdities initiated street protests that gave birth to free trade unions (Solidarnosc). The book ends on the imposition of Martial Law. For a whole new generation communism is just an anachronism. The book aims at depicting everyday reality under a system that was more surreal than utopian. The narrative occasionally slips back in time to the Second World War and the Warsaw Uprising in which the authors’ parents took an active part.

This was funded by Self Made Hero. Andrzej’s graphic novels reach a wide public through major publishers.
This abstract will be extended to include significance, originality and rigour after its completion and publication.
