  • Besides/In a Paradigmatic Way

Lomax, Yve, 2008, Journal Article, Besides/In a Paradigmatic Way The Journal of Visual Art Practice, 7 (3). pp. 205-212. ISSN 1470 20029

Abstract or Description:

The remit of this journal is the 'problem of critique'and my contribution draws upon a longstanding concern with asking: What does it mean to write critically?

Building upon this concern, my contribution embraces the task of critique as troubling presupposition. Drawing upon the philosophical writings of Kant, Deleuze and Agamben, this research forces its reader to think anew about indifference and, in relation to this, exposes how presupposition works in language. The significant statement/question of this research is: Do we not learn to presuppose through language?

The contribution this body of reserach offers is that of introducing to the problem of critique (and research in the context of fine art) the paradigmatic method. Taking its cue from Plato's desire for true knowledge to reach an unpresupposed principle, this work explains, with the aid of Giorgio Agamben's rigorous attention to detail, the relation between the example and the paradigm (for both, what dwells besides) and shows how knowledge is here produced without presupposition.

The work ends with the proposition that critique, in not resting content with given, constructs by way of paradigms.

The research context for this body of writing is that of providing an example of the 'art of writing theory' whilst making an exposition of the paragidmatic method.

The journal is distributed world and the research led to following:

'To Be and Example', n.pardoxa, ed. Katy Deepwell, Vol22, Summer 2008, pp16-20. Commissioned 'artist pages' that present the paradoxical and paradigmatic existence of the example.
