Webber, Tristan, 2019, Show, Exhibition or Event, A Brand n/Utopian : The Fashion Designer as Sci-Fantasy social visionary.
Abstract or Description: | The idea behind this paper is to draw comparisons between the work of Bill Gibb as Fashion Designer and the contemporary work of Science Fantasy illustrative artists such as Patrick Woodroffe, Alan Aldridge and Mati Klarwein, for example. How did the hallucinogenic and multi-species renderings of folkloric science fantasist worlds in the late 1960’s and early seventies, correlate with the writings of Ursula K Le Guin, and are there correspondences that can be drawn between the visual art of this short period, the depictions of neo-societies and advanced cultures in Science fiction/fantasy writing and the elaborate highly crafted renderings of Bill Gibbs work, and question, how could Fashion have reverted to such a conservative standpoint half a century later? |
