  • For Children Not For Children

Gluzberg, Margarita, 2018, Show, Exhibition or Event, For Children Not For Children

Abstract or Description:

'For children not for children' was a one person exhibition at Filet, a project space run by Rut Blees Luxemburg and Uta Kogelsburger. The exhibition featured a new body of work - drawings that explore Soviet children's culture, autobiography and fiction. The works challenge the practice of drawing and introduce the medium as a material research tool. The works are composed from many image sources, and challenge the way we recapture personal memories from digital archives. They continue to address ideas around translation, reconfiguration and desire – that are crucial to Gluzberg’s practice.
Central Research questions:
• How can the autobiographical be reconfigured through archival children’s films and cartoons?
• Are notions of linear time challenged by our ability to access a plethora of archival material from the past, that previously only existed ‘as a memory’?
• Can Drawing be presented as a medium that escapes the historical positioning that Painting demand?
As art of the exhibition a public event took place – a conversation between Margarita Gluzberg and the writer Tom McCarthy. This allowed for themes within the work to be explored through a wider research context. A key text that provided a parallel structure for the discussion was Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Pleasure In Drawing.
