Dormor, Catherine, 2018, Book Section, Caressing cloth: The warp and weft as site of exchange The erotic cloth: Seduction & fetishism in textiles. Bloomsbury, London, pp. 123-132. ISBN 9781474281751

Abstract or Description:

Taking as its starting point, the notion of the caress, what I want to consider here is a framework of cloth-based thinking that positions or –repositions the body as a site of exchange between two. Thinking of and from the female body, this chapter explores the caress and its inter-relationship with textile, most specifically woven cloth, and thus positioning the warp and weft as a site of exchange. This idea of the caress, as a form of porous communication between two is focused upon here under three themes which can collectively be thought of as a (re)awakening, a term drawn from Luce Irigaray’s search for a language of the caress. The three sections, then, are dehiscence, which explores the idea of the cloth-as- caress as stimulus between two; inter/intra-dermal modalities, which develops the idea of the cloth-as- caress as a gesture-space which enfolds into and onto itself through the physical interplay of dermal and epidermal layers of the skin; and finally, a nomadic caress, which draws on Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of a nomadic experiencing of the world and considers the cloth-as- caress I terms of an understanding of the landscape through performative action and reaction, holding within itself a sense of the infinite. I conjunction with these themes, I will also be considering the caress within artworks by Ann Hamilton, Chiharu Shiota and Susie MacMurray.
