  • A New Design for Work - ICON MAGAZINE OPINION PIECE

de Leon, Nick, 2017, Printed Publication, A New Design for Work - ICON MAGAZINE OPINION PIECE

Abstract or Description:

Much has been written about the impact of robotics and artificial intelligence on the future of work, however less consideration has been given to pro-actively designing the work experience itself. Professional services firms excel in re-engineering business processes and creating new organisations to deliver them, however to what extent do they consider whether the resulting jobs will be rewarding or dignified. In this article de Leon explores how Service designers, could contribute to this design challenge. As a discipline, service design has the tools and frameworks to address this for both the public and private sectors, but that involves a change of emphasis by designers themselves, as well as the need for new skills and knowledge. Whereas they have focused on a customer centric approach to design, they will need to move toward designing for both those who benefit from a service as well as those who provide it. In this article de Leon explores the contribution service design can make to the design of work, and the impact for business who are engaged at one end of the spectrum in a war for talent and at the other are facing a commoditisation of labour and potentially its reduction through technologies such as AI and Robotics.
