(Re)Fit for (Re)Purpose describes, and exemplifies, what may happen when the life and the meaning of a particular object, or entity, is extended through its reuse. It will examine the idea that any useable thing, such as a particular object, or a building, can be (re) fitted for a purpose that it was never intended to accommodate. Using three exemplars, it will propose that these processes usually involve the careful and innovative engineering of any existing objects, usually in order to make new interior spaces. These processes are undertaken in order to make environments and elements capable of being transformed into something they were never intended to house, or to be. A (Re) Fit for (Re) Purpose approach will transform redundant or obsolete objects, elements, spaces and buildings, as well as in-use matter, by adapting it in such a way that it becomes refitted and thus rehabilitated. This approach negates the usual dependence on an architectured environment, the space in which an interior is often housed. Instead this essay will explore some examples of what interior space is like when it is made beyond the realms of the architectured envelope, in what I will term as a post-architecture environment.
