Thompson, Milly, 2016, Show, Exhibition or Event, Cougar

Abstract or Description:

A show of paintings and poster-prints including ‘I Choose Painting’ (see ‘Akerman Daly 'artist in residence' 2016/17’).
'I Choose Painting' is a piece of art text in the form of a poster-print. It looks at the use of paint and new media as tools of expression for women, and of the accentuation on female artists to use new media to express feminist/anti feminist concerns. ‘I Choose Painting’ attempts to ‘claim’ painting for women as a ‘gendered tool’. Of course, the work itself is a digital one and is thus innately and intentionally hypocritical.
The paintings concentrate specifically on representation in paintings of older women – lazing around on beaches or at pools in various states of undress. They are confident and relaxed, doing what they want to do in a state of preferred solitude.
These themes are a continuation of the research drawn out in earlier work such as the 'Romance Posters', and exhibitions and installations such as 'Évasion', 'C21st ART-WORKER' and the ideas and themes in the publication 'Alison Jones & Milly Thompson C21ST RECENT HISTORY', 2016. The painting 'Hunter watching the beach' is used as a basis for the Artist Tea Towel Company commission in 2016 (see Artist Tea Towel Company - Hunter watching the beach, 2016). The research is continued in ‘Merchandise & Accessories’, 2017.
